Authorities in Montgomery County, Maryland, located a food truck that was reported stolen on Remembrance Day.

the The “Turner’s Beltway Bistro” food truck has disappeared from the 8800 block of Brookville Road in Silver Spring. He was found abandoned in Charles County, Montgomery County Police said in a tweet.

The owner of the truck is relieved by the news.

“[There have] been a few sleepless nights for sure, ”owner James Turner told WTOP since finding out his truck was no longer there.

Turner said police gave him little explanation of how the $ 50,000 truck arrived in Charles County, where it was found painted white. He is aware of some damage to the ignition key area, but is awaiting information on the general condition of the vehicle and its return date.

The local chef said he has invested a lot of time and money in his own business, which will now have to be put back on track financially.

“Now that the truck is found, it’s a little less difficult, but it will still take time to get it to where it should be,” says Turner.

Turner also messaged whoever picked up the vehicle.

“What you did created a major setback not only for me, but also for the people who were going to work for me,” Turner said.

Montgomery County Police said no arrests had been made and Turner said he had not been notified of anyone who might be interested in the case.

Some restaurants charge more as food prices skyrocket https://frychef.com/some-restaurants-charge-more-as-food-prices-skyrocket/ Thu, 03 Jun 2021 09:49:00 +0000 https://frychef.com/some-restaurants-charge-more-as-food-prices-skyrocket/

CINCINNATI – Groceries are more expensive now than they were a year ago, and some restaurants are charging more because of rising food prices to make ends meet.

Kristen Bailey is the owner of Sweets and Meats BBQ. She said she didn’t want to raise the prices of her menu items, but if she didn’t, her business wouldn’t last.

“I’m sorry, I was charging $ 12 and now I’m charging $ 15,” Bailey said. “I just can’t do this physically. I can’t afford to do this. I would go bankrupt.”

Part of the reason she had to increase the prices was partly because she had to order more food to keep up with the increased sales, but the other reason is that the food, especially the meat. , costs more.

“Our food costs are typically around $ 2,500 twice a week,” Bailey said. “We get deliveries on Mondays and Thursdays, our bill this week was $ 4,800 just for our Monday delivery … Chicken alone is up 42%.”

Due to rising costs, the restaurant has increased its prices for the first time since opening. Meal prices increased $ 2, sandwich prices increased $ 1, and desserts and sides increased $ 0.50.

“Our customers have been very supportive of this,” Bailey said. “They said they were happy to pay the price, they are happy to make the trip to come and support us, they see the value we offer. Everything is cooked from scratch using family recipes.”

However, some menu items will not be profitable, because the cost is just too high.

“We won’t even have chicken wings on our menu this year,” Bailey said. “The cost is just huge for a chicken wing, I would pay people to eat wings at this point.”

Other restaurants sell chicken wings, but they plan to sell them at “market price”, like lobster.

Scotty Berens, the chef at Deadlow Brewing, said his restaurant weighs around 800 pounds. wings in a week. He said they haven’t raised wing prices yet, but will have to do so soon.

“I hate comparing chicken to lobster, but right now, where the prices are going down, that’s what you have to do,” Berens said. “You raise the price, you put the ‘market price’ on your menu. It’s sad that we have to go back to that for the chicken wings, but that’s what it is.”

The Lincoln Food Bank hosted its 19th annual Empty Bowl Fundraiser, handing out artisanal bowls to those who give back to the community in need.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lincoln Food Bank hosted its 19th annual Empty Bowl Fundraiser, distributing handcrafted bowls to those who give back to the community in need.

A unique drive-thru has driven locals to give back, with hundreds to help Lincoln’s Food Bank with their take-out Empty Bowls fundraiser.

“The event typically draws close to 1,000 guests,” said Michaella Kumke, of the Lincoln Food Bank. “We are really delighted that we did not achieve this capacity this year, but several hundred people have turned out to support the event this year.

The food bank partnered with down under pottery some Lincoln restaurants which offered a variety of soups.

Due to COVID-19, attendees were given a bowl and were able to choose one of four prepared soups to go instead of tasting them all as in the past.

One owner says that while it’s not the same, he’s happy to come back year after year.

“So it’s a good cause that touches a lot of people,” said Andy Wilson, of restaurant La Paz.

“People are always happy to see the chorizo potato soup and come back for a few seconds.

But today it’s a little different. It has a different twist, like just handing it over instead of being in a place that serves it.

“What makes this event so special is that it brings together foodies, artists and community members determined to help us alleviate hunger,” said Kumke.

A participant adds that she supports her because the needs in her city are great.

“Being able to meet the basic needs of our community will help our community move forward together,” said Stacy Dam. “It is therefore important to support these kinds of events.

Browning could make lakes less productive, affecting food webs and fish https://frychef.com/browning-could-make-lakes-less-productive-affecting-food-webs-and-fish/ Mon, 31 May 2021 12:44:02 +0000 https://frychef.com/browning-could-make-lakes-less-productive-affecting-food-webs-and-fish/

As more dissolved organic matter enters lakes in the northeastern United States, darkening the lakes in a phenomenon called “browning,” new research shows these waters may become less productive and able to support less life. . In a study published today in Limnology and Oceanography Letters, scientists have found that, rather than enriching lakes with nutrients as previously assumed, water more loaded with dissolved organic matter blocks sunlight and restricts plant growth.

“A key question regarding the browning of lakes is what impact it will have on aquatic food webs, including algae growth and fisheries,” said Kevin Rose, co-author and assistant professor of biological sciences at the Polytechnic Institute. by Rensselaer. “These results demonstrate that browned lakes are increasingly limited by light. As a result, the algae and aquatic plants that grow in these lakes will be increasingly limited to shallower areas, restricting an important food resource for the lake. invertebrates that feed fish. This change could make it difficult for fish that typically rely on visual foraging, such as brook trout, to find prey. “

Browning is the result of environmental changes that include the recovery of acid rain, changes in land use and climate change. Scientists had previously speculated that as more dissolved organic matter poured into lakes, levels of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus would also rise, potentially offsetting the effects of reduced light. But according to Jonathan Stetler, the lead author and a graduate student working with Rose, nutrients don’t increase as the lakes darken over time. In the absence of an increase in nutrients, the models created by the authors predict that darker lakes will be less welcoming to plant and animal life.

Le brunissement pourrait rendre les lacs moins productifs, affectant les réseaux trophiques et les poissons

Peak summer average photosynthetic potential estimates for the entire lake for 28 study lakes during the period 1994-2012 in the Adirondacks (data from Leach et al. 2018b). The solid blue dots represent a significant long-term decrease while the solid red dots represent a significant long-term increase in the tendency of the Sen slope (p

“The lakes are turning brown, and across the region, there is a correlation that shows that the browner lakes have more nutrients. But when we look back in time, we see that the lakes that are turning brown have similar nutrient levels to those. that they had before turning brown, ”Stetler mentioned. “This tells us that the processes that control nutrients in space and time differ from each other.”

To reach their conclusions, the research team conducted an extensive spatial survey, collecting data on carbon, nutrient levels in water, and light penetration into lakes across the country, and s’ is also turned to one of the few long-term datasets with similar information. , which was collected from 28 lakes in the Adirondack Mountains from 1994 to 2012.

The spatial survey provides insight into how nutrients change with browning and was based on samples the team collected from 38 lakes in New York City, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota, and data from 90 lakes in across the country collected as part of the 2012 National Environmental Protection Agency. Lake Assessment. These data showed that browner lakes indeed have higher nutrient levels than lighter lakes.

But the Adirondack Mountains data set showed that these nutrient amounts don’t change. Researchers found that nitrogen levels actually decreased, a likely result of the Clean Air Act. Meanwhile, phosphorus levels have not changed, a finding that could be due to changes in soil pH or the effects of global warming.

“In the Adirondacks and other northern areas, acid rain recovery has seen a simultaneous increase in dissolved organic matter flowing into surface waters. We were surprised to find that nitrogen and phosphorus levels do not increase with dissolved organic matter, ”said Charles Driscoll, co-author and professor at Syracuse University. “Since limiting nutrients can reduce the productivity of the lake, this observation has important implications for the future structure and function of these aquatic ecosystems.”

Stetler said the results, which revealed a discrepancy between data collected in a spatial survey and long-term recordings, underscore the need for long-term continuous monitoring. Biological field stations are often the cornerstone of long-term monitoring efforts, but given the difficulty in securing funding for monitoring efforts, long-term data is scarce.

“As is often the case, the true value of these long-term data sets is not fully realized until decades later,” Stetler said. “Although useful inferences can sometimes be obtained from spatial surveys, there is no substitution for long-term data.”

Good news for anglers: “browning” has less of an impact on fish than expected.

Bucks Knocks Out Hunger gives pantries healthy options https://frychef.com/bucks-knocks-out-hunger-gives-pantries-healthy-options/ Sun, 30 May 2021 02:09:48 +0000 https://frychef.com/bucks-knocks-out-hunger-gives-pantries-healthy-options/

A recent survey by the Bucks County Hunger and Nutrition Coalition shows that locally, 59% of food insecure households include at least one person with a chronic illness – a statistic that matches the national results. Feeding America reports that of all American households that visit pantries, 58% have at least one limb with high blood pressure, and 33% have at least one limb with diabetes.

Managing a chronic disease can be difficult, even under ideal conditions. It is even more difficult for those who experience food insecurity.

“Food insecurity” describes a lack of financial resources for food at the household level. Food insecure households have less control over what foods they can access than households with more financial resources.

Help eliminate hunger: The pandemic has left 30,000 residents of Bucks County without enough food. Help the United Way end hunger

Frequently, the most affordable fast and hearty foods are canned or processed with significant amounts of sodium, fat and sugar.

But with many chronic health conditions like diabetes or hypertension that are directly related to diet managing, local hunger relief organizations are emphasizing ensuring better options for residents of Bucks County.

Maddie Burgess, manager of two large-volume pantries operated by the Bucks County Housing Group, has partnered with Philabundance to improve the diet and health of pantry guests.

The Healthy Pantry Initiative works with food banks and pantries to increase the availability of healthy food and drink options. The initiative encourages consumption of these foods by making environmental changes, such as placing healthy foods in more visible and attractive displays at eye level. It also offers nutrition education such as healthy food tastings, demonstrations, recipes and classes.

“It’s really important to have healthy options that customers can choose from just like anyone else,” said Burgess.

While Burgess has high hopes for her clients’ health to improve, she stressed that Bucks County will see better health outcomes across the county if more local pantries can provide healthy options. United Way of Bucks County’s Bucks Knocks Out Hunger campaign is playing a key role in making this happen.

“We know that a good diet is essential for staying healthy,” said Tim Philpot, director of financial stability and health for the United Way of Bucks County. “This is why Bucks Knocks Out Hunger is so important. Healthy food has always been our priority. All cash donations help provide fresh, local produce, eggs, lean protein, and other staples. “

This year’s Knock Out Hunger campaign also includes a county-wide contactless food drive on June 18-19. Organizers are encouraging supporters to donate healthier foods, like low-sodium canned goods, juices with no added sugar and whole grains. elements.

“Less than half of the people we surveyed locally said they were able to follow the diets their health providers recommended over foods they could get in pantries. If more people donate healthy options this year, we can help fix that, ”Philpot said.

“We want to make sure that food insecure people are both fed today and healthy tomorrow. “

How you can help

United Way of Bucks County hopes to raise 30,000 pounds of healthy food this year, as well as $ 100,000 to buy healthy food for pantries.

The food drive, a contactless drive-thru operation, will take place on June 18-19. To learn more about the drive, see a list of the types of healthy food items needed or donate to the Bucks Knocks Out Hunger Campaign, visit www.uwbucks.org/bkohunger or mail a check to Bucks County United Way, 413 Hood Blvd, Fairless Hills, PA 19030 and write BKO Hunger in the memo line.

“We are hungry”: little food for families fleeing the DRC volcano | Volcanoes News https://frychef.com/we-are-hungry-little-food-for-families-fleeing-the-drc-volcano-volcanoes-news/ Sat, 29 May 2021 08:19:07 +0000 https://frychef.com/we-are-hungry-little-food-for-families-fleeing-the-drc-volcano-volcanoes-news/

Residents of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) woke up to stronger tremors on Saturday morning, as fleeing families seeking shelter from a dreaded second volcanic eruption struggled to find enough food and water.

Dozens of people died when Mount Nyiragongo volcano, one of the most active in the world, came back to life a week ago, sending rivers of lava spilling out towards the nearby town of Goma which destroyed thousands of houses along the way. The lava stopped just before the city limits, but thousands more fled Thursday when the government warned the volcano could erupt again at any time.

Most people headed for the town of Sake or the Rwandan border to the northeast, while others fled by boat across Lake Kivu. Nearly 10,000 people are taking refuge in Bukavu on the south shore of the lake, according to Governor Theo Ngwabidje, many of them with host families.

In Sake, about 20 kilometers (13 miles) northwest of Goma, people slept where they could – by the side of the road and inside classrooms and churches.

Kabuo Asifiwe Muliwavyo, 36, said she and her seven children had not eaten since arriving on Thursday.

“They told us there would be a second eruption and there would be a big gas explosion,” she told Reuters news agency as she cradled her crying.

“But since we moved, there is nothing left here … We are starving.”

Evacuee Eugene Kubugoo told AFP news agency that the water gave children diarrhea and said, “We have nothing to eat and no place to sleep.”

Hassan Kanga, a lawyer who fled after the eruption, said: “They told everyone that the aid would be organized, that the money would be disbursed by the government.

“And yet you find us under the stars.”

Rwandan President Paul Kagame on late Friday called for “urgent global support” to deal with the crisis, while the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said some 400,000 people were in need of support or protection .

“With an increased risk of a cholera epidemic, we call for urgent international aid to avoid what could be a disaster for children,” said Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF representative in the DRC.

The evacuation order was issued at around 1 a.m. local time on Thursday after radar images showed molten rock flowing beneath Goma.

The movement of the magma has caused cracks in the ground and hundreds of earthquakes, which could allow it to rise to the surface in another eruption, the Goma Volcano Observatory (OVG) said.

Volcanologists say the worst-case scenario is an eruption under the lake. This could release hundreds of thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) that is currently dissolved in the depths of the water. The gas would rise to the surface of the lake, forming an invisible cloud that would linger at ground level and displace oxygen, suffocating life.

But the frequency and intensity of ground shaking has declined over the past 24 hours, suggesting the risk of another eruption is fading, OVG’s Celestin Kasareka Mahinda said on Friday.

“I don’t think we’ll have a second blowout. The problem is the risk of fractures, but the risk is low, around 20%, ”he told Reuters.

The Congolese authorities, meanwhile, have reopened the main road which was cut in two by lava, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Thursday.

On Friday almost all shops and banks in central Goma were closed, and only a handful of people and a few motorcycle taxis were in the generally busy streets.

In the poorer neighborhoods in the north of the city, a handful of stores were open and there were more people, including children frolicking near a tanker.

“I will stay in town. I know I am in imminent danger but I have no choice, ”said Aline Uramahoro, who runs a beer store. “I’ll leave when the volcano starts to spit.”

Nearly 3,500 meters (11,500 feet) high, the Nyiragongo straddles the tectonic division of the East African Rift. Its last major eruption, in 2002, killed around 100 people and the deadliest eruption on record killed more than 600 people in 1977.

Herman Paluku, who gave his age at 94, said he’s seen them all – and insisted he wouldn’t budge this time.

“There is a small hill near here, which means the lava is not reaching us. And that’s what protects us a bit, ”he said in Swahili, his hands sweeping the air.

“I will never be able to leave here in this situation.” I can not.
