When we last visited with Stephanie Berghoff, she was cooking up a storm.
His new business, The Home Cook, was booming. A mother of young children and passionate about delicious food, she cooked healthy, fresh meals at a church in Weston 4 days a week. She and an assistant then delivered starters and side dishes on Mondays and Wednesdays, directly to customers’ homes.
Customers — working couples who want home-cooked meals for their families; stay-at-home parents with little time to cook; frequent travelers and people with family emergencies — loved Stephanie’s dinners. And ease of delivery.
Three years later, The Home Cook is sizzling. She took over the old NewBrook Kitchen & Artisan Market on Saugatuck Avenue. She reconfigured the interior as a police station space, including a cold room.
Berghoff currently employs 6 people in the kitchen, 6 “packers” and 14 delivery people. Every Monday and Wednesday they depart with “Home Cook” meals, all the way to Pelham, New York.
Meals arrive fresh; there are no “kits”. No cooking is required; reheating instructions are included. There is also no subscription. Some people order regularly, even weekly. Some order less often, even once in a while.
Berghoff serves them all with pleasure.
The menu has expanded to several weekly protein offerings and a dozen side dishes. Portions vary from 1 to 4 people.
Recent entrees included seared mahi mahi fish tacos, braised ribs in red wine and garlic, chicken piccata, Jamaican jerk chicken skewers, grilled chicken with ginger and lime, beef stew summer meals, spinach and artichoke lasagna, miso-glazed cod and children’s meals.
Berghoff offers different menus every week. “I don’t want to be bored,” says Berghoff. “I also don’t want my clients to be bored.”
His personal favorites: sesame noodles and Mongolian steak.
The Home Cook has cooked up more ideas. A “grocery store” offers pick-up options such as margarita mixes, low-fat tuna and chicken salads, honey mustard, truffle honey, BBQ seasoning, carrot-ginger dressing and pesto feta dip – plus insulated tubs.
Berghoff also organizes parties.
As a home delivery service, it has been hit by rising gasoline prices. Food prices are also rising.
But customers continue to be willing, even happy, to pay for the convenience of a home-cooked meal.
In particular one prepared and delivered by The Home Cook.
